Introducing... The Swarm, By Artium Instruments

video upload by Artium Instruments

"Artium Instruments is thrilled to introduce its very first offering, The Swarm, a polyphonic desktop synthesizer."

via Artium on Kickstarter

At Artium Instruments, we approach our designs with the understanding that musicians cultivate intimate connections with the gear they employ to create their art. We firmly believe that instruments ought to possess not just functionality, but also personality, character, and a distinct identity that inspires its user. First and foremost, we've dedicated significant effort to ensuring that the synthesizer and onboard effects produce exceptional sound quality akin to professional studio-grade equipment. The Swarm features a SuperSaw oscillator with 8-note polyphony, curated onboard effects, and a full-featured arpeggiator.

At Artium Instruments we are committed to knob-for-knob functionality in our desktop synths. Every feature of The Swarm is directly mapped to a knob, button, switch, or jack, ensuring effortless control. There's no need for menu-diving or complicated button presses to access features; everything is conveniently accessible at your fingertips.

With over a decade of experience in the effects industry, we have carefully curated a selection of effects that complements the synth core. Unique to The Swarm is its capability to use the onboard effects with other equipment, allowing you to route external audio through the input jacks on the back.

We've invested considerable thought into crafting the overall feel of the instrument. From the layout of the knobs to the choice of colors, artwork, and weight of the enclosure, every detail has been considered. These details matter to us because we recognize that the connection a user forms with a piece of gear is nearly as crucial in the creative process as the sounds it produces. We hope you can feel the love and passion we've poured into every detail of The Swarm, from its sonic capabilities to its design aesthetics.

The Swarm is controlled by MIDI through a USB-C port. Most modern class-compliant MIDI controllers with USB functionality should plug in and work immediately with zero setup. Additionally, The Swarm provides power to your controller, streamlining your setup process. For older controllers that only have DIN connections, a USB to DIN converter can be used to ensure compatibility.

The Swarm features a SuperSaw oscillator with 8-note polyphony. This oscillator is composed of seven individual saw waves stacked on top of each other. The magic happens when you detune the waveforms by applying a frequency offset, resulting in one of the most massive synth sounds available.

The Swarm employs this SuperSaw oscillator through two distinct control modes: Polyphonic Mode and Arpeggiator Mode. In Polyphonic Mode, you can play up to eight notes simultaneously. Arpeggiator Mode offers a comprehensive monophonic arpeggiator, automatically sequencing held notes in a variety of patterns.

All onboard effects can be used with external equipment. Simply plug an external audio source into the rear input jacks, and The Swarm will seamlessly mix the external audio with its synth core, allowing for simultaneous processing of both signals.

By pressing the touchpad on the right, The Swarm records a 1000ms sample of the current audio. It then layers, and smears the sample, creating an infinite drone frozen in time—a perfect foundation for layering additional notes. The freeze effect facilitates overdubbing, and pressing the touchpad with the freeze knob at its minimum setting erases the memory, allowing you to capture a fresh sample.

The Swarm's delay is a digital delay with a subtle touch of warmth. The delay length synchronizes with the arpeggiator clock, which can be adjusted manually using the clock knob or via the tap tempo touchpad on the left. Additionally, the delay features a multiplier knob, offering a range of unique subdivisions that complement the synced arpeggiator, including quarter notes, dotted eighth notes, eighth notes, and triplets.

The reverb effect in The Swarm strives to enhance the natural body and ambience of the synth core without overshadowing it. Its stereo reverb algorithm is controlled by a single knob, which adjusts both the mix and decay simultaneously. This versatile control allows you to seamlessly transition from realistic room or hall effects to expansive cathedral-like soundscapes, offering a wide range of atmospheric possibilities.

The SuperSaw oscillator practically demands to be paired with a chorus effect. The Swarm employs a stereo 4-voice chorus effect alongside a gradually shifting LFO, aiming to craft dimensionality without becoming nauseating.

"The Body Synths Metal Fetishist is a Percussion Synthesizer featuring a loopable randomness sequencer and a eurorack-compatible control-voltage interface.

Explore percussion by synthesizing simple Kicks, harsh Noise, fuzzy Drones, digital Glitches and plucky microtonal Melodies
The Metal Fetishist is a beat-making platform designed for rythm discovery and percussive sound design. The unapologetically digital sound engine includes a single oscillator, a white noise source, a resonant multi-mode filter and a digital distortion section featuring downsampling and overdrive.

Random sequencing with control
The Metal Fetishist features two randomness generators. At every trigger step of the sequence, the Random Step Mod section creates a new modulation value that can modify the Pitch, the amount of Noise or the filter Cut-Off value, while the modulation amount can be selected manually. At every sequence step, the Random Skips control decides if the current step will trigger or not, based on the skipping amount selected. The big STEPS knob won't do anything at its OFF position, leaving the synth in completely random mode! But as you turn it right it will lock the previously generated random step values into repeatable sequences of length 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32. Have fun with it!"

One Orchestra To Rule Them All
Majestica Pro and Ultra are the same Majestica you know and love, and so much MORE! It is the largest symphony orchestra ever sampled, containing 240 players divided into 5 sections: strings (100), brass (60), high woodwinds (30), low woodwinds (30), and percussion (20). We upgraded it to our new user-friendly Century UI. We have also included our Polyphonic Legato and TM Pro Arcs in this iconic library.

Majestica Pro (formerly 8W: The Eighth Wonder, exclusive to our V8P members) boasts an expanded array of 5 extra microphone perspectives: a spacious Wide option as well as 4 distinct spot mixes per ensemble. These spot mics become your creative allies, enabling you to spotlight and accentuate individual instruments. Craving more prominence for the burning, brassy sound of the cimbassos in the brass ensemble? Eager to amplify the impact of those Bartok pizzicatos from the basses, or feel the rumbling contrabassoons resonate through your entire body? Simply dial in the spot mics for any instrument and open a realm of extreme sound within the grandeur of the largest orchestra ever assembled.

Majestica Ultra is the complete arsenal of this colossally epic orchestral library. Complete with the entire Majestica Pro orchestra and mic positions, it is also enhanced with dozens of synths curated specifically for film scores and epic music, dozens of ambiences, and Hybrid Cinematic Effects. Majestica Ultra is truly the ultimate "score-in-a-box."

Derived from our exclusive V8P sample catalogue, Majestica is designed for composers and producers that desire the ultimate, unrivaled, epic symphonic sound. We spared no expense and there is nothing like this on the market.

Majestica Ultra was recorded at 96kHz in the same large, world-class orchestral hall used for exclusive V8P series and 8Dio instruments such as CAGE, AGE, and Lacrimosa Epic Choir. It includes 3 microphone positions (Mixed, Decca and Far). The UI system for Majestica was built from scratch and contains over 35,000 lines of code giving you the ultimate experience in ease, flexibility, and playability."

Modular Day Barcelona 2023 after party - HRTL

video upload by Befacosynth

"There are few in the Czech electronic music culture with a background as storied as HRTL, the performing alias of Prague-based synthesiser musician Leoš Hort. Iconically performing from the centre of the dancefloor, HRTL is a force of the wildest nature on his instruments of choice, a carefully curated setup of modular synthesisers and tabletop instruments. Infamously electrifying and always improvised, each of his live club performances is quite literally one-of-a-kind; generative breakbeat rhythms meet with liquefying acid, and synths sliced from the utmost peaks of euphoria."

Eric Schlappi and Bastien Lavaud - Orbital Mirrors

video upload by SCHLAPPI ENGINEERING

"Part of an improvisational audiovisual jam session between Eric Schlappi and Bastien Lavaud on August 26th in Grenoble, France, lightly edited afterwards.

Audio is Eric Schlappi using a prototype of the Nibbler as a crude sequencer and another Nibbler at audio rate dividing down the lead synths frequency to create the bassline. The lead is a Three Body and the Kick is formed with the Angle Grinder and Boundary modules. There are also some overdubbed blasts of noise using a Nibbler at audio rate with the shift register functionality.

Video is Bastien Lavaud using a mix of @syntonie1487 (including the upcoming Solaire and Seuils modules) and @lzxindustries video modules as well as some video feedback through a camera.

Please watch in the highest available quality as compression is quite harsh on the video synthesis methods used.

Schlappi Engineering THREE BODY / 'ratio locked' modulation madness ft. Xaoc KOSZALIN

video upload by BRiES

"Here i'm running the outputs of all the vcos into a mixer. There's a lot of stepped modulation going of for the FM and phase indexes (indices?).

After a while I add left and right outputs of Koszalin which is processing a multed output of the mix of waves coming from Three Body.

I didn't know what to expect from a frequency shifter but it sounds like a mix between a very unique chorus and 2000 era talkbox synths (Boys Noize)."

Kaivo: A Brief Introduction

video upload by Madrona Labs

"techniques (physical modeling and granular synthesis) in an easy-touse semi-modular package. It’s laid out a bit like an acoustic instrument; the GRANULATOR module acts like the player’s touch, exciting one or more tuned objects (here, the RESONATOR module, based on physical models of resonant objects) that come together in a central resonating body (the BODY module, also physics-based)."

Physical Modeling in Kaivo

video upload by Sormena Project

"Last but not least we look at Kaivo. Kaivo is what I call experimental physical modeling. The instrument itself is fully customizable (modular) and when you combine that with a granular sound engine and a physical modeling section you’re going to get some wild results. As you’ll see in the video what you select for the resonator and for the body (the physical modeled modules) has a huge impact on the final timbre that’s produced. Note that unlike PianoTeq or String Studio this instrument requires you to use samples. Therefore physical modeling is just one aspect of this instrument and is used more like an effect that you can blend to taste rather than a dedicated method."

Ensoniq ESQ-1 Wave Synthesizer - w/ LED Sliders

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Pics of the inside below.

"This ESQ-1 has been completely overhauled and restored and features upgraded LED sliders. It includes an original Ensoniq ESQ-1 E2 PROM Storage Cartridge.

You're not likely to find another ESQ-1 for sale like this one any time soon. Yes, you might see so-called "professionally refurbished" synths out there, but none like this.

There were no compromises when it came to restoring this ESQ-1. However, I did not attempt to restore this ESQ-1 cosmetically, so there are nicks, light scratches, and other signs of age and use. Read on to see what was done:

CLEANING:

This ESQ-1 has been completely stripped down, literally every part removed and thoroughly cleaned by hand.

For the body, buttons, and keys, I used hot, soapy water, brushes, cloths, and towels to remove all gunk and nastiness that built up over the years.

Every key was removed, cleaned, and if there were chips or holes they were filled and repaired.

The wires and contacts along the keybed were all cleaned and adjusted where necessary.

Every body part was removed and cleaned as described above - no body part was left in place before cleaning.

Each button was removed and cleaned, along with the display cover.

Old flux and grime and dust were all cleaned off the PCBs using appropriate solvents and cleaners. The jacks were all cleaned out. The cartridge port contacts were cleaned.

The pitch and mod wheels and mounting hardware were removed, scrubbed, and cleaned.

Soma TERRA

video upload by Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"The instruments that SOMA Synths build are some of the most innovative, original and inspiring musical tools around today. I just took delivery of TERRA, which continues their ambitious release of beautifully bizarre and unique creative instruments.

According to their press release - “The core idea is unity of nature and technology, and a perfect balance between simplicity and versatility. Behind the extremely simple interface hides a complex polyphonic, microtonal synthesiser with a broad and flexible sound palette that ranges from classical beautiful tones to complex atonal noise, and offers smooth and fast transitions between these extremes.”

You play by touching the sensors and can even use motion sensor to modulate and alter the sound by intuitive movements of your hands and body.

What I love is how it combines the world of the acoustic instrument, the bodily relationship to the device, as well as the flexibility and free range possibilities of synthesis. The housing of TERRA comes from a solid piece of wood, making each instrument unique and, so mine is utterly mine and mine alone. Here's what I made in the first couple of hours of playing with it today."

Schlappi Engineering THREE BODY / perfect ratio phase modulation / DX sounds in eurorack

video upload by BRiES

"It's something we probably all tried to do at some point: tuning 2 or more sine VCOs in exact ratios to each other to create clear FM or PM tones like the digital 'fm' synths of the mid 80s like the Yamaha DX and the Casio SZ series... I know I have... and while usually I love the ever so slight but inherent instability of most eurorack VCOs it's the one scenario where they caused me to figuratively pull the (still literal) hair out of my scalp.

Well... Three Body takes care of that, so we (the mostly XY chromosoned segment of us at least) can keep our manes intact just a little bit longer."

HEARTBEATS - The Knife (BRiES cover) / Schlappi Engineering THREE BODY

video upload by BRiES

"THREE BODY by Schlappi Engineering takes care of 100% of the bass arpeggio in this video (aka the main synth). It's very interesting to be able to get all this grit without losing the ability to turn it down for a less harsh sound and without having to worry about relative pitches of your carrier and modulators. No processing was done to the audio coming from THREE BODY afterwards (apart from some low and mid cut EQ and a smidge of compression).

The sequencing for the bass (and part of the higher pitched arp and hihats) is done with eurorack sequencers, I recorded the main part in one take (which I recorded). The poly synth stabs were created with my own plugin PLL-102 (which you can buy as part of my VST pack 'SYNTHS one' on the Decent Sampler webshop).

There's no play-back going on in this video, everything you see happening was recorded live and used unaltered (apart from gentle eq, some compression and autotune - Melda Productions MPitch - for the vocals).

Your boi BRiES takes care of 100% of the singing (which I autotuned in this version of the upload) so be prepared for some vocal cringe.

I spent most of my birthday recording the audio and video for this cover. It's something that I've been wanting to do for a long time (recording a cover where the main part is taken care of by a eurorack system). The song 'heartbeats' (the José Gonzales version) popped into my head a few days ago and I just had to give it a try.

To whom it may concern:This is a cover of the song 'Heartbeats' by The Knife. This video isn't monetized nor is it sponsored (no one is making money off of this video). All rights to the song and lyrics are reserved to The Knife."

"Beautiful condition wonderfully musical Korg Monopoly. Reluctant to sell this! Custom wood body and side panel. I’m not the original owner, I did replace the wood panels and checked out the circuits. You can see it’s been serviced and I can confirm it is the original circuitry (looks like at some point someone may have modded the filter, a common adjustment with these, then later someone else restored it to the original circuit). Like many vintage analog VCO synths it takes a minute to warm up before the tuning is stable."

New Soma Synths ILLUMINATOR (First Experiment)

video upload by Richard Devine

"ILLUMINATOR is an eight channel converter that turns Eurorack and analog CV signals into a voltage that drives LEDs and LED strips, creating a unique light show in sync with your live performance. CV signals coming from your music gear are already pulsating with the different parts and sounds of your track, so there is no need for any kind of programming or light operator.

You can focus on playing your set and let ILLUMINATOR take care of the rest, creating a dynamic visual show that follows your tracks down to every note and beat!

No presets, no memory-just your music driving the lights. Create intense strobe-like effects by connecting rapid hi-hats from your analogue drums, or use slow external LFOs for a moody ambience during your ambient sessions.

ILLUMINATOR is compatible with standard 12V LED strips that are affordable and widely available. LED strips are flexible and typically come with adhesive on the back, so it’s easy to attach them to any objects and surfaces, including irregular and unusual ones. It can be your Eurorack case, synth stands, walls of the venue, furniture and even your body! This way you can create a unique light show that would otherwise require an expensive (and unwieldy!) lighting setup. Everything you need for your ILLUMINATOR show easily fits into a small backpack for just a couple of hundred euros.

ILLUMINATOR can also run an art installation, as LED strips are far from its only application. It can drive anything that accepts DC 12V with a current up to 0.5A. You can hook up anything from motors, electromagnets to old-fashioned filament bulbs. It’s the perfect beating heart for your weird mechanical steampunk orchestra. Your imagination is the limit!

ILLUMINATOR accepts all types of CV signals in the range from 3 to 20 volts. Each of the eight channels contains an individual trimmer pot that defines the sensitivity of the channel. It not only adjusts the optimal input range for connected CV sources, but it can also set the brightness of each LED strip. The default factory setting for all trimmer pots is made for the range of 5V, compatible with most gear out of the box.

Applying bipolar CV is also possible, but the negative part of the signal will not light up the LEDs (everything below zero will be processed as zero).

CV signals can be connected to ILLUMINATOR using Eurorack mini-jacks or PULSAR-23-like pins and alligator clips. PSU DC IN and all outputs are standard DC sockets 5.5×2.1 mm center plus."

Roland Jupiter-8 61-Key Synthesizer Early Edition with MIDI SN 060306

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"It is an early one (one of the first five hundred if the serial number finder is accurate). It has had Encore midi installed before I purchased it so it has a whole lot of extra banks for patch storage. I would say mechanically it is Excellent and cosmetically it is Good. If inflation wasn't killing me and my son didn't need braces I would keep this synth forever. I just had it serviced and the internals are in great shape. Had the faders looked at, the keys replaced that needed it, the felts changed if necessary. Cosmetically it may not be the most perfect example but it is certainly not bad for its age. The only part of the body that is not in good shape is where the last owner changed the power cord; he kind of messed that one hinge up when he put the cord receiver in. My tech said it is fine but he couldn't really put a new hinge there. I truly did not notice it until my tech opened the synth up and pointed it out to me. This synth sounds amazing. It truly is the King of Synths. Everything functions as it should..."

Black Corporation Kijimi: Let's Stack Witih the Hydrasynth!

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Here are 9 patches using both the Kijimi and the Hydrasynth. The first 10 seconds of each sound are Hydrasynth only, then the Kijimi is added. Minimal reverb added, the clipping in the second-to-last sound is part of the Hydrasynth patch. Hydrasynth sounds are presets- in case you're playing along at home:

0:00 A-077
1:02 B-042
1:40 A-054
2:15 A-089
3:12 B-015
4:18 B-045
5:11 M1-016
6:15 D-068
6:56 D-087

The Kijmi adds a nice body to the Hydrasynth. As much as I love the Hydrasynth, there's nothing analog about its sound. This combination could do some amazing evolving sounds but I don't have the patience for that."

RD-9, TD-3, Buchla & Nord Modular Live from SYNTHON 909 DAY FEST

video upload by The Galaxy Electric

"Here is an excerpt from our SYNTHON 909 Day Fest performance. It was so much fun and such a successful stream. The TR-909 drum machine has become a genuine staple in electronic music production. With an illustrious list of tracks that feature those iconic sounds it is strictly unavoidable. We recently acquired the RD-9 by Behringer which attempts to clone much of the voicing used in the iconic drum machine. Did they do it? You be the judge. Alongside the TD-3, a clone of the TB-303 Bassline, the 909 makes it easy to cop a sense of nostalgia dating back to the 80s. This was a time when folks started implementing these poorly selling machines acquired at Pawn Shop prices to make music for dancing at the club. This underground dance music originated in Chicago, Detroit, and New York but quickly spread to the UK and Europe and took off like a shot. The rest is history, but that doesn't mean it should be forgotten. We took this opportunity to improvise on machines that evoke this sense of nostalgia to conjure the spirit of this very early and often minimal approach to make you move your body. Additional funk provided by the Buchla modular which acts as a synth voice and sampler in this context. The Nord Modular provides the background synths this time, but don't you worry, it will have its day to shine. "Get ready for a super nerd session, no talking just me tinkering with the Korg drumlogue for the very first time. Korg Australia were kind enough to give me a play with a sneak preview pre-production model of the drumlogue. Unfortunately I had no manual at the time, so please excuse me in advance. Hopefully this video provides some context to its sound. I feel this will be a winner for Korg, well done! Great sound, neat size, this could be a monster of a machine.

All the sounds and effects in this video are from the drumlogue, there are no external sounds or effects. Simple stereo output from the drum machine. No other drum machines were hurt in the making of this video.

A paradigm shift in drum machines.

drumlogue marks a paradigm shift in drum machines. It offers the raw power and rich sounds of Analog, the flexibility of Digital voices, and drumlogue’s SDK for fully customizable User Custom Synthesizers.

On top of that, its heavy-duty, dynamic sequencer, customizable effects, and intuitive controls will make drumlogue a must-have in your studio to create music for any genre or style.

It’s time to take your beats and entire musical process to a whole new creative level with incredible sounds, effects, customization, and sequencing. Let drumlogue support your craft on your musical journey!

Raw Analog Power

drumlogue was conceived to provide the ultimate analog sound for your beats, and delivers fantastically; featuring completely newly developed analog circuits by legendary Korg analog synth team engineer Junichi Ikeuchi (ARP 2600 M, MS-20 mini, ARP Odyssey…) , the depth and richness of its sound is on a whole new level.

These new analog circuits - (Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Low Tom and High Tom) - will not just provide a solid foundation for your track, but make it stand out with an elevated harmonic richness and a thick low end.

Blending simplicity and ease of use, the most important controls for each of these parts have dedicated knobs on the front panel that can be tweaked at any time without any menu diving necessary, so you can quickly and intuitively fine tune your sound on the fly.
For further sound exploration, each part provides many more parameters accessible through the powerful onboard sound editing system.

Last but not least, each part on drumlogue - analog or digital - has a dedicated volume knob that will make your mixing process incredibly smooth and easy.

Digital Flexibility

As the perfect partner for its analog section, drumlogue provides 7 digital parts; 6 sample based and 1 synthesis based (Multi-Engine). The sample based parts can play any of the preloaded PCM banks on drumlogue. You can also import your own User Samples to its memory, making drumlogue an extremely versatile machine with virtually limitless sonic possibilities.

To start with, the 64 preloaded drum kits of drumlogue will provide you with a wide variety of sounds spanning several genres so you can easily kick-start your tracks.

For additional sounds, samples can easily be easily loaded into the drumlogue just by connecting your drumlogue to your computer via USB and simply drag-dropping your samples onto the main memory.

Multi-Engine and logue SDK

The popular Multi Engine from prologue and minilogue xd is now more powerful than ever. In addition to the Variable Phase Modulation (VPM) and Noise generator engines, the Multi Engine features a new User Custom slot that can play full-fledged synth voices that provide vast sonic possibilities, never before heard on a drum machine.

Custom Synths

drumlogue’s synth voices are not simply static waveforms. Custom synths can be built to not only generate sound, even implementing built in filters, LFOs, MIDI controlled polyphony or other parameters is now possible The only restriction for third party developers is their creativity (and CPU usage!), giving you unbound sound exploration.

Exclusive Sinevibes Synth Plugin “Nano”

Korg has collaborated with popular logueSDK plugin developer “Sinevibes” to include a brand new synth plugin “Nano” as a factory preset on drumlogue. This exclusive plugin explores the power behind the expanded Multi Engine and will give all drumlogue users a taste of this new platform.

“Nano” is a full-fledged virtual analog synth with a wide array of features and plenty of customizable parameters. The synth engine has dual oscillators with optional ring modulation, a 4-pole state-variable filter with soft clipping distortion, built-in EG and built-in multi-waveform LFO.

Leads, basses, percussive sounds or cinematic effects, you decide how to use this incredible sonic potential!

A True Sequencing Powerhouse

drumlogue harnesses all of its sonic power to an extremely powerful internal sequencer that is flexible and easy to use.

Tired of the same old beats? drumlogue's heavy duty 64 step sequencer makes it easy and intuitive to create complex rhythm patterns and polyrhythms that elevate your music creation process with innovative features such as per-step probability, per-step alternate trigger patterns, per-step micro offsets, per-track groove patterns and much more.

Thanks to its clear OLED display, it is also very easy to visually follow and edit your sequences.

drumlogue is both great in the studio and playing live. With its Chain mode, creating long and interesting patterns is straightforward and clearly displayed. In Loop mode you can switch between several variations to play your sequence in new and interesting ways. The Motion and Accent recording functions are intuitive and fast and if you want to try new things on your track, the Randomization function is there to help you. These functions and many more on the drumlogue will support and spice up your live performances!

Effects and customization

drumlogue includes several high-quality effects across three categories that can be used simultaneously: Delay, Reverb and Master effects.

The send amounts for delay and reverb effects can be set independently for each part, and multiple return points are available.
The master effects allow you to add that final polish to your sound and bring it all together. Master effects can be bypassed on a per-part basis, making it possible to send the effect to specific audio parts. A sidechain bus is also available to master effects which can make use of it.

THE OBERHEIM OB-X8 HAS ARRIVED

video upload by Oberheim Official

"For the first time in over 40 years, a legendary analog synth sound returns.

The OB-X8 combines the three different voice architectures of the classic OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 synths into a single incredible instrument. The individual filter types and other unique characteristics of each model have been faithfully reproduced, along with an uncompromising 100% analog signal path, giving you the most authentic and satisfying OB experience possible.

Oberheim is BACK!"

Oberheim OB-X8 INHALT Sound Design Demo No Talking

video upload by INHALTVIDEO

https://inhalt.bigcartel.com

"My history with Oberheim runs deep. Probably the most important synthesizer for me was the Oberheim OB-8. I connected deeply with its melancholic and midnight music sounding tone which matched very well what I was doing with INHALT at the time. But never to be beguiled by softer emotions, the flick of the unison switch instantly took the OB-8 into an aggressive "body" music. It was the perfect writing tool due to the even tone across all octaves and the fact that its intrinsic musicality was unavoidable. Around the time I got the OB-8 I also got a vintage 2 Voice (thanks for restoring that one Chok) and both were heavily used on many records that I made. Those were my MVP's for many years.

When I received the call from my colleagues at Sequential that not only was a new Oberheim in the works, but that it was to be THE Oberheim, I couldn't wait for the beta testing and sound design to start. And when the prepro unit arrived, I knew that the newly reborn and official Oberheim company, in tandem with the team at Sequential, created something incredible. Something so comprehensive, deep, detailed, featured and yet immediate and simple, with no possibility of making a bad sound. Every sound I made sounded exactly as it should, and they ALL embodied that unmistakable Oberheim sound. That magic that is often imitated but never accomplished. Until now.

I'm not going to get into specs, those have been already covered everywhere, but I will say this: as someone that has used all of the "big" Oberheims, and that has made many records in commercial studios with the OB-8 and a vintage 2 Voice, I can definitively say that this Oberheim does all of those sounds and more. Its charisma changes from filter to filter and it seamlessly traverses from X, Xa to 8 with the Page 2 voice offset and vintage knob, but it ALWAYS sounds like the genuine Oberheim that it is. This incredible team, that I've had the pleasure of working with, has created something that might possibly be the ultimate polyphonic analog synthesizer. And I can't wait to use it on the many upcoming projects at Infinite Power Studios.

This is a recording I made of many of the patches I created for Oberheim and the shipping factory library that will come with the synth.

Please note, the OB-X8 in the video is a prototype unit and I recorded this with a beta firmware. As such, while the synth was largely done there were some changes both to the panel and to the OS that are in the final shipping version (obviously). The OB-X8 was recorded straight into Pro Tools HD and no post processing or fx were added. What you're hearing is the raw synth."

The Sound of the Oberheim OB-X8 - Julian "J3PO" Pollack [custom knobs on this one]

video upload by J3PO

"Oberheim has released a new synthesizer--the first in many decades--the OB-X8. It is a faithful recreation of all three of the classic OB-series synthesizers in one: the OB-X, the OB-Xa, and OB-8. It is an incredible synth.

In this video, you will hear a bunch of presets I created for the OB-X8. Some of my sounds will be included factory with the OB-X8 while most of these presets will appear in a presets pack I will release soon (check www.j3po.net for the release of my official sound bank). This particular unit is an early prototype with non-production knobs. The final production units will look slightly different.

It is important to note that the OB-X8, like the original OB's from back in the day, does NOT contain any onboard effects. In this video, I used some external reverbs and delays to give certain presets the ambience and resonance they deserve. Light compression and limiting was applied for the purpose of uploading to YouTube and balancing the sounds."

Update: Oberheim OB-X8 Preset Demos

video upload by james terris

"I'm always reluctant to post something in prototype form. When I had this unit it was sonically pretty close. Obvious at a glance are the knobs and 3D printed bender box levers. The synth itself sounds great and such a dream to play with a nice modern key bed."

And the press release:

Oberheim Returns to Operations and Releases Its First New Synth in 35 Years

San Francisco, CA – May 9, 2022 – In a momentous industry development, Oberheim Electronics, one of the most venerated names in synthesizer design, has announced its return to operation to meet the rising global demand for its instruments.

Today, the company is launching its first new product, the OB-X8: an eight-voice polyphonic analog synth that combines all of the key features of the legendary OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 products from the 1980s – including all the original presets that gave them their signature sounds.

“I wanted to come back strong with a new design that brings together the sounds of the greatest instruments from across the OB range, together with the distinctive sound and styling of those synths,” said Tom Oberheim. “But we took it even further. You can now combine the various OB voice architectures in ways that produce unique and interesting new sounds and capabilities.”

Originally founded by Tom Oberheim in 1969, Oberheim Electronics created ground-breaking products that fueled the electronic music revolution throughout the 1970’s and early 1980’s. After ceasing operations in 1985, these instruments attained near-mythical status, with highly prized vintage models selling for many times their original price on the secondhand market.

Since that time, Tom Oberheim had created a handful of limited-production instruments and co-designs with various partners under other names. But in a recent significant development, he regained control of the Oberheim trademarks and IP, and now, in partnership with Focusrite PLC, has decided to once again introduce new products under the Oberheim brand name for first time in more than 35 years.

“I’ve always had a very optimistic outlook on our industry and the future in general. I felt that one day, when the time was right, Oberheim would return. A big part of this was the fact that so many musicians have contacted me over the years to ask how to get hold of an original Oberheim. So when I finally reacquired the Oberheim name, it was clear that the time was finally here,” said Oberheim.

The catalog of artists associated with the original products is long, and includes innovators like Prince, Van Halen, and Herbie Hancock. For many, it was much more than just an instrument. A handful of A-list artists such as Trent Reznor, creative force behind Nine Inch Nails, and Golden Globe, Academy Award, and Primetime Emmy-winning composer got pre-release previews. “When I was shown the new OB-X8, I was immediately impressed with the forensic level of detail that went into its design and the respect for its lineage,” remarked Trent. I will be making room in my studio for one and I’m excited more people will be able to experience this classic instrument.”

Creating a new company out of thin air was no small feat. “I’m excited to work with my old friend and audio industry innovator Marcus Ryle, along with some other members of the original Oberheim team again,” said Tom. “And thanks to an exclusive partnership with Focusrite group company Sequential LLC, we have the ability to design, manufacture, distribute, and support new instruments on a global scale.”

For Marcus Ryle, one of the inventors behind the ADAT, the QuadraSynth, and Line 6 guitar amps and effects, this represents closure of sorts: “Synths were my first love and the reason I entered this industry. Tom hired me when I was 19, and I feel lucky to have been a part of the Oberheim design team during its glory days. Now, a whole new chapter in the story of analog synthesizer-based music is about to get written.” Dave Smith, founder of Sequential and himself a legendary figure in synth history, also collaborated with Marcus (an Oberheim team member from the 1980s) and Tom to create the new product. “We’ve already developed other interesting design ideas with Tom for follow-up products that will allow us to take Oberheim into the future as a synth brand,” commented Smith. “It’s a very exciting time to be a musician.”

The OB-X8 eight-voice analog synthesizer will be available at the end of June with a US MAP of $4,995.
